CARF International and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) announced in June 2020 the ASAM Level of Care Certification nationwide. This certification addresses the addiction crisis by establishing processes for validation of treatment program capabilities, building industry transparency and increasing patient confidence in treatment services.
Increasing patient access to evidence-based addiction treatment is critical to overcoming challenges of the addiction crisis. This certification gives patients, their loved ones, payors, and regulators the knowledge that a given treatment program is capable of administering evidence-based addiction treatment that is appropriately matched to a each patient’s individual needs.
ASAM criteria is the most widely used set of guidelines for addiction treatment. It is also the most comprehensive. This certification will act to improve the quality of addiction treatment in several ways:
- Addiction Treatment providers will receive recognition for their commitment to quality care
- Resources will be made available to addiction treatment providers seeking to improve quality of care
- Payors and policymakers can use certification as a tool to support implementation of ASAM criteria
