Comedy Intervention IX

Comedy Intervention IX | Turning Point of Tampa

Please join us for Comedy Intervention IX with Alonzo Bodden, winner of the 3rd Season of Last Comic Standing and John Lehr, The Original Geico Caveman. This year’s event will be held at the Historic Tampa Theatre on Sunday, March 20th with doors opening at 2:00pm and showtime at 3:00pm. This show is for our Alumni, the recovery community, community partners and anyone who needs a laugh. Tickets are on sale for $10.00 each and can be purchased at the Tampa Theatre Box Office, Tampa Theatre website or at Turning Point of Tampa. We have kept ticket prices low so that more people in recovery can attend this great live event!

This year is particularly exciting as Turning Point of Tampa celebrates 35 years of service in the community, having carried the message of recovery to over 15,000 people. We believe that fun in recovery is vital to a healthy program. We are grateful to our Alumni and community partners for all of their support over the years.

Comedy Intervention was started in 2008 by Joan Browne, Stacy Washburn and the blessing of Robin Piper. We held the first event at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center with the hysterically funny Mark Lundholm. His show was called “Addicted” a comedy of substance! It was so successful that we held the event again in 2009 with Mark. We missed in 2010, but were back in 2011 for Comedy Intervention lll and Mark Lundholm again! This man truly “rocks the house.” Because the event was so popular, we needed to add chairs in front of the stage and I’m pretty sure there were 850 people in attendance that year! In 2012 for CI-IV we had Bob Perkell, but we had Mark Lundholm back for CI-IV in 2013 and CI-V in 2014. The laughter was too much, so we took a break for CI-VII 2015 and invited one of Mark’s friends, Kurtis Matthews, who worked with Mark on the Addicts Comedy Tour.

When it’s good, don’t fool with it, so in 2018 for CI-VIII we invited Mark Lundholm back for a Halloween Special. All of our events at the Masonic Center have had different themes, including dancing Alumni and staff as warm up acts on stage and of course, the infamous musical recovery ball toss for prizes. It has been a fabulous run and Turning Point of Tampa appreciates Mark, Kurtis and Bob for their genius comedic work in entertaining the audiences for 10 years!

I am personally delighted to get back on track with Comedy Intervention IX at our new venue, The Historic Tampa Theatre with Alonzo Bodden and John Lehr. Alonzo will be doing mainstream stand-up comedy with references to his recovery and John will be doing a comedic lecture, called Addiction 101.There will be T-shirts on sale and lot of fun and laughs to be had. Hope to see you there!
