What is Substance Abuse?
Substance abuse is the misuse of substances that are legal or illegal, including alcohol and drugs. When substances begin to negatively affect a person’s life or relationships, it may indicate a bigger problem.
The most common types of abused substances are alcohol and opioids.
Is Substance Abuse the same as an Addiction?
Substance abuse is not the same as addiction. Addiction is a chronic, progressive brain disease that can be managed with treatment. Substance abuse is the act of using substances in a way that leads to physical and social problems.
Is Substance Abuse the same as an Addiction?
No, addiction can be treated and managed, but not cured. Treatment centers can help an individual stop using drugs or alcohol, manage their addiction, reduce withdrawal symptoms, improve their health and quality of life, and learn how to live a sober life.
The first step in any substance abuse treatment and rehab facility is to determine if detoxification or withdrawal management is needed.
Drug and alcohol rehab centers will do an assessment over the phone and if a person meets criteria for admission, the rehab center will schedule time for an intake to their program.
Substance Abuse Treatment
Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences. Treatment for addiction typically consists of cognitive behavioral therapies and counseling.
While some treatment centers focus on treating populations with a particular type of addiction, you can generally count on most rehabs treating whatever substances you are struggling with.
Drug and Alcohol Rehab Treatment Team
A treatment team will be the life blood of any inpatient rehab or intensive outpatient program. The treatment team meets with each patient to individualize a treatment plan for successful and lasting recovery.
Types of Treatment Services
Detoxification
Drug and alcohol addiction detoxification is the process of eliminating toxins and harmful substances from the body.
Medical detox is a procedure that helps people recover from a drug or alcohol addiction. It can take up to a month, but it will depend on the person and their withdrawal symptoms.
It is important to have a medical professional in a specialized treatment facility supervise this process because there are many factors that can affect how long it takes for drug detoxification to be complete.
Inpatient Treatment
Inpatient alcohol and drug treatment is a type of individualized treatment where the individual stays at the treatment facility for an extended period of time. This type of addiction treatment is also known as residential treatment.
Treatment Center Phases
The person will go through different phases during their stay, including detoxification, rehabilitation, and aftercare. The length of stay can vary from weeks to months or years for some people depending on the status of their long-term recovery.

Led by one of the Turning Point of Tampa therapists, it is a safe place to share, where everyone participating understands what it means to make the transition from treatment to everyday life.Outpatient Treatment
A traditional outpatient treatment program will occur based on the need of each client. Individual and group will be offered as well as any additional services requested. An outpatient program offers fewer hours than the intensive outpatient program.
Mental Health Co-Occurring Disorders
Substance use disorders are a group of conditions that are characterized by the abuse of or addiction to substances. When these disorders co-occur with mental health disorders, the prognosis is poor.
The co-occurrence of substance use, and mental health disorders is not uncommon, as up to one in four people with alcoholism or addiction also have a mental health disorder.
Treating both conditions simultaneously can lead to better outcomes in terms of treatment effectiveness and quality of life.
What it Means to be Dually Diagnosed
The term dual diagnosis describes someone who suffers from both addiction and another type of psychiatric or medical condition.
This condition could include depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress, ADD or ADHD, or any of a number of other mental health or behavioral issues.
For more information on illnesses that often accompany drug or alcohol addiction, visit the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) website.
