Narcotic Abuse

Signs and Symptoms of Narcotic/Opiate Abuse:

Although the term narcotic is often used when referring to all drugs........

Narcotics are drugs derived from opium (heroin, morphine, codeine, opium, methadone, etc). Abused for their euphoric effects, these analgesic drugs produce an altered interpretation of painful stimuli, decreased anxiety, and promote sedation. Because the most popular administration of these drugs is IV, the associated health concerns specific to IV drug use and sharing needles (HIV, AIDS, hepatitis) are increased.

» Lethargy, drowsiness
» Constricted pupils fail to respond to light
» Redness or raw nostrils (inhaling powdered forms)
» Scars of "tracks" on arms or other parts of the body from injections
» Use or possession of paraphernalia
» Slurred speech
» Tremors
» Loss of interest in personal needs
» Loss of interest in food
» Depression
» Nausea
